The Library

There is an extensive library of books and an archive of material on the town's past. If you want to find some aspect of the history of the town or the immediate area this is probably the best place to start looking.

We can also refer people to other sources such as Dorset County Museum of which the Society is a member.

The library is available free for members of the Shaftesbury & District Historical Society for all others we do ask for a discretionary donation towards library funds.

Latest Projects

The Shaftesbury Borough Archive cataloguing project organised by the Dorset History Centre is revealing intriguing facts and documents about the town's history, as well as involving volunteers in making this information more accessible.

Dorset History Centre is working in conjunction with volunteers from Shaftesbury's recently refurbished Gold Hill Museum.

Volunteers are helping to extract detailed information from elements of the archive which will then be used by the museum to assist with narrating the story of this ancient borough.
